Freaky Beanz

Jon Freaky Beanz

Best served Hot !!

Interview : Smart Monkey

The Freaky Beanz project is the first part of an album of quintessentially good-time skankin’ party from music producer Avalon Jon, former Heavenly Social resident DJ and funk-assed rocker with his band Koot

We at Free Radical Sounds were keen to interview him at the Free Radical Sounds ‘Dublick’ club nite where John throws some choice bass end scandalous selections to an enthusiastic crowd.

Jackal
John : Well what You need to know is that we operate from a secret location in south- London from a biscuit factory and the first track on the "21st Century Ska album "Pearly King Skank" forms part of a concept album of "cheeky skankin’ leg winding hip -hop cheezy partyness.

Apart from myself in Freaky Beanz I work in a band called "Koot" who are classic slackster - psychonauts who write songs that are rocky but are well deep and funky in the way they nod their heads to a number of different styles of music.

Smart Monkey : With Freaky Beanz I pick up on a lot of influences such as Ska and reggae and hip hop where does all of that that come from ?
John : Well that came from the music that was around me and I guess I got more aware of it in my later teenage years. I come from slap-bang middle of the Carnival, apart from hip-hop and reggae, there were a lot of radios stations, LWR, Kiss, Powerjam, Touchdown...and a lot of what I liked came from them. I would spend a lot of my weekends tuning-in.

Smart Monkey : What do you think about people picking up on Ska music in it's third generation ?
John : I think it's very lively music as well as the rocksteady style and that it's great as long as you can do something with it, apart from using it as a back - beat to something. You can make some really good music, the Ska may be a little hectic for some crowds but generally it goes down really well on the night as long as people are 'avin it.

Smart -Monkey- What is the future for Freaky Beanz how do you see it?
John- Well I hope to see Freaky Beanz on "Top of the Pops." with a full live band, kickin’ arse .We'll get some singers to front the outfit. I have started writing songs which were. based originally on collected samples but I'm trying to get more away from that by using real live instrumentation.

Smart Monkey : Tell me about the Euphonium which is on "Pearly King Skank"
John : OK, the featured artist on the track is Stephen Large on the euphonium. Steve is a member of Koot and this instrument has been hanging around on top the vocal booth for well.. maybe about two and a half years. And we felt that it was time to blow the dust off it and to get it out and to hear what it sounded like. It seemed to be the perfect instrument to sit on top of the Ska track. providing a bit of raspberry flavour........

We left Jon then to drop some more of his bass heavy - heavenly - skalicious tonnage, thanks Jon.
